Silver
The JSE has introduced the listing of a Silver futures contract which is quoted in Rand and linked to the COMEX listed (a division of NYMEX) product on SAFEX. The listing programme will ensure that there are always two expires available for trade. The contract months to be listed are March, July, September and December.
Silver has attracted people's interest for millennia. The malleable and durable metal has been employed over time in varying uses ranging from eating utensils to jewellery to electronics. The price action of the metal is often correlated with gold and is therefore inherits plenty interest from inflation and risk traders together with the fundamental buyers of the metal.
Unlike gold there is not a significant market for the metal in a recycled form and the supply is predominantly sourced from mines. The major producers of the metal are Mexico, Peru and the USA
The SAFEX listed contract price is calculated using the USD price together with the ZAR forward points which translate into a ZAR per ounce price.
One contract is equivalent to 500 troy ounces with the price reflecting the price per ounce.
